John William5 Vanderheiden (Lambertus4 Van der Heyde, Jozef3, Johannes Arnoldi2, Arnoldus1) was born 11 September 1861 in De Pere, Brown County, Wisconsin, the son of Lambert and Maria Magdalena (Vinkenvleugel) Vanderheiden.  He died 26 May 1937 in Carroll, Carroll County, Iowa. He was buried at Mount Olivet Cemetery at Carroll, Iowa.  He married Theresa Helen Ricke 07 January 1892 in Breda, Carroll County, Iowa, daughter of Richard Ricke and Mary Fleege. She was born 15 April 1865 in Galena, Jo Daviess County, Illinois, and died 30 July 1923.  She was buried at Mount. Olivet Cemetery at Carroll, Iowa.

i. Philomenia Mary6 Vanderheiden, born 06 June 1892 in Auburn, Sac County, Iowa; died 27 March 1989 in St. Anthony's Hospital, Carroll, Carroll County, Iowa.

ii. Maude Theresa Vanderheiden, born 17 February 1895 in Auburn, Sac County, Iowa; died 17 July 1948 in Upland, San Bernardino County, California.

iii. Regenia Cecila Vanderheiden, born 25 October 1896 in Breda, Carroll County, Iowa; died 04 October 1983 in Colbert's Nursing Home, 2022 NW Division Street, Gresham, Oregon 97030.

iv. Earle Augustus Vanderheiden, born 13 March 1901 in Breda, Carroll County, Iowa; died 07 January 1964 in Carroll, Carroll County, Iowa.

Philomenia Mary6 Vanderheiden (John William5, Lambertus4 Van der Heyde, Jozef3, Johannes Arnoldi2, Arnoldus1) was born 06 June 1892 in Auburn, Sac County, Iowa, and died 27 March 1989 in St. Anthony's Hospital, Carroll, Carroll County, Iowa. She was buried 29 March 1989 at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Carroll, Carroll County, Iowa.  She married (1) Robert Silas Steel 18 November 1914 in St. Mary's Church, Auburn, Sac County, Iowa. Reverend A. E. Zimmerman presided. Robert Silas Steel was born 01 May 1885 in Piper City, Ford County, Illinois, and died 20 December 1943 in Carroll, Carroll County, Iowa.  He was buried 23 December 1943, Mount Olivet Cemetery, Carroll, Iowa, and shares a gravestone with Minnie.  She married (2) William John Smittle 23 May 1945. William John Smittle was born 14 May 1874, and died 22 July 1955.  According to Minnie's obituary, William John Smittle died in Portland, Oregon.  William John Smittle was from St. Paul, Minnesota.

Philomenia Mary was known as "Minnie".  She had no children.

MINNIE STEEL SMITTLE

     Mass of the Christian burial for Minnie Steel Smittle, 96, of Carroll, will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 29, at Holy Spirit Church in Carroll.
     Mrs. Smittle died Monday, March 27, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.
Celebrants at the Mass will be the Revs. Mervin Hood and Richard Ball. Lector will be Arnold Beckman, Gift bearers will be Jean Lowe, Judy Loneman and Betty Beckman. Casket bearers will be Tom, Joe, Pat, Bob and Chuck Loneman and Darrell Booth.
     Burial will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Carroll.
Visitation will begin at 2:30 p.m. today at Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll. Rosary will be recited at the funderal home today at 5 p.m. by the Legion of Mary and at 8 p.m. by Holy Spirit Parish.
     Born June 6, 1892, in Sac County, she was a daughter of John and Theresa (Ricke) Vanderheiden. She grew up in Carroll County and was educated in county schools.
On Nov. 18, 1914 she was married to Robert Steel. Following their marriage the couple farmed in various communities until 1925, when they moved to Carroll. In 1927, they built the former Lincoln Tourist Camp in Carroll. Mr. Steel died in December 1943.
On May 23, 1945 she was married to William J. Smittle. In 1940, they moved to Portland, Ore., where Mr. Smittle died in July 1955.
     She had lived in Carroll since 1956. She had been a resident of the Carroll health Center nursing home for the past several years.
She was a member of Holy Spirit Parish in Carroll, the Parish Ladies Guild and the Legion of Mary.
     Mrs. Smittle is survived by her sister-in-law, Emma Vanderheiden Broich of Mount Carmel and several nieces and nephews.
     She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Robert Steel and William Smittle, a brother, Earl Vanderheiden; and her sisters, Jean Danner and Maud Howe.

OBITUARY

MRS. MAUDE T. HOWE

     Mrs. Maude Therese Howe, 53, wife of Russell C. Howe, 232 East G street, Upland, died this morning at her home following a heart attack. She had been in ill health for some time.
     A native of Iowa, Mrs. Howe had resided in Upland 16 years. She is survived by the husband, two daughters, Mrs. George Seidel and Mrs. George Blaton, both of Upland; two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Smittle and Mrs. Gene Danner, both living in Oregon; one brother, Earl Vanderheiden, of Iowa.
     Funeral arrangements in charge of Stone mortuary are incomplete.

EARL VANDERHEIDEN

     MT. CARMEL -- Earl Vanderheiden, 62, former Mt. Carmel resident, died Tuesday, Jan 7, in St. Anthony Nursing Home, Carroll, where he had resided since last September.
Requiem mass will be read at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church by the Rev. O. W. Koester. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.
     Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 7 pm Thursday. The rosary will be recited Thursday at 8 and 8:30 p.m. and on Friday, at 3, 8 and 8:30 p.m.
     Mr. Vanderheiden was born March 13, 1901 at Mt. Carmel, a son of John and Thresea Ricke Vanderheiden. On Jan. 8, 1930, he was married to Emma Osterholt in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church with the late Rev. John Berger officiating. Following their marriage the couple lived in Mt. Carmel. He was employed by Carroll County Maintenance until 1957. During the years 1955 to 1961 they operated the Vanderheiden Custodial Home at Mt. Carmel. In September, 1963, they retired and have made their home at St. Anthony Nursing Home. Mr. Vanderheiden was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church.
     Surviving are his wife; five children, Earl Jr. and Jean, Minneapolis, Minn.; Mrs. Merlin (Judy) Loneman, Mt. Carmel; Mrs. Arnold (Betty) Beckman, Carroll; and Mrs. George (Shirley) Gregory, Eugene, Ore; 12 grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Smitte (sic), Carroll, and Mrs. Jean Danner, Portland, Ore.
     Mr. Vanderheiden was preceded in death by one son, LeRoy, and one sister, Mrs. Maude Howe.

He was born 28 October 1908 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, and died 30 July 1982 in Dade City, Pasco County, Florida.  Burial: 03 August 1982, Dade City, Pasco County, Florida.

George Carl Fred and Illa Avis (Howe) Seidel had ____ child.

Ivah Alice7 Howe (Maude Theresa6 Vanderheiden, John William5, Lambertus4 Van der Heyde, Jozef3, Johannes Arnoldi2, Arnoldus1) was born 27 September 1917 in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa, the daughter of Russell Clark and Maude Theresa (Vanderheiden) Howe.  Ivah Alice Howe was a twin. Her twin brother died at birth.  She married George Kerries Blanton 11 July 1938 in Yuma, Yuma County, Arizona, son of John Blanton and Nora Perser. He was born 24 November 1917 in Afton, Texas, and died 29 August 1989.

George Kerries and Ivah Alice (Howe) Blanton had two children.

Lorain Theresa7 Danner (Regenia Cecila6 Vanderheiden, John William5, Lambertus4 Van der Heyde, Jozef3, Johannes Arnoldi2, Arnoldus1) was born 14 May 1917 in Auburn, Sac County, Iowa, the daughter of John Benjaman and Regenia Cecila (Vanderheiden) Danner Jr.  She died 22 September 1982 in Poway, Sandi County, California. Burial: 25 September 1982, 2:00 pm at Riverside National Cemetery, Riverside California 92058, Grave 709 Sec 6.  She married (1) Edward J____ Donovan. He was born 21 February 1912. She married (2) Theodore John Schulte 22 September 1936 in Souix City, Woodbury County, Iowa. Reverend Julius Berger presided., He was born 27 November 1913, in Emery, Hanson County, South Dakota, the son of John and Clementine (Stallman) Schulte. 

Lorain Danner and Theodore Schulte had one child.

Viola Gertrude7 Danner (Regenia Cecila6 Vanderheiden, John William5, Lambertus4 Van der Heyde, Jozef3, Johannes Arnoldi2, Arnoldus1) was born 20 May 1918 in Auburn, Sac County, Iowa, the daughter of John Benjaman and Regenia Cecila (Vanderheiden) Danner Jr.  She married Fred Max Linton 02 January 1949 in Pasco, Washington.  He was born 27 November 1921 in Mitchell, South Dakota, the son of James and Clara (Nagle) Linton.

Fred Max and Viola Gertrude (Danner) Linton had no children.

 

 

13. Melvin Philip7 Danner (Regenia Cecila6 Vanderheiden, John William5, Lambertus4 Van der Heyde, Jozef3, Johannes Arnoldi2, Arnoldus1) was born 12 May 1921 in Lanesboro or Glidden, Jasper Township, Carroll County, Iowa, the son of John Benjaman and Regenia Cecila (Vanderheiden) Danner Jr.  Delivered by Dr. M. J. McVay. Melvin Philip Danner was christened 29 May 1921 at Sacred Heart Church at Manning, Iowa. Reverend J. G. Berger presided.  He married Dorothy Lucille Atwood 28 May 1949 in Spokane, Washington. Justice of Peace Gordon S. Lower presided.   She was born 14 August 1922 in Spokane, Spokane County, Washington, the daughter of Joseph and Lottie (Devereaux) Atwood.

Burial: 17 February 1999, Gethsemani Cemetery, 11666 SE Stevens Road, Portland, Oregon. She was buried next to her second husband, Pete Togart in Lot 1133, Sec 3.  She married (1) John L______ Kelley 30 January 1946 in Portland, Oregon, son of Tom and Jean ( _______ ) Kelley.  She married (2) Pierre Togart 18 October 1958 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.   Pierre "Pete" Togart was born 03 February 1913 in Copenhagen, Denmark, the son of Jens and Carmilla (Larsen) Togart.  Pete Togart died 09 July 1985. Pierre Togart was known as "Pete".  She married (3) Paul H____ Lange 20 September 1986 in St. John's Catholic Church at Milwaukie, Oregon.

John L. and Evelyn (Danner) Kelley had no children.

Earl George7 Vanderheiden (Earle Augustus6, John William5, Lambertus4 Van der Heyde, Jozef3, Johannes Arnoldi2, Arnoldus1) was born 04 December 1930 in Carroll, Carroll County, Iowa, the son of Earl Augustus and Emma Mary (Osterholt) Vanderheiden.  He married Renee JoAnne Howard 13 September 1958 in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota. She was born 29 November 1934 in Fargo, Cass County, North Dakota, the daughter of daughter of Joseph and Malfried (Johnson) Howard.

Earl George and Renee JoAnne (Howard) Vanderheiden had _____ children.

Carmel, Carroll County, Iowa, the daughter of Earl Augustus and Emma Mary (Osterholt) Vanderheiden.  She married (1) _______ _________.  She married (2) Roy Thomas Lowe 22 June 1968 in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota. He was born 12 February 1921 in Lake City, Wabasha County, Minnesota.

18. Juliana Bernadina7 Vanderheiden (Earle Augustus6, John William5, Lambertus4 Van der Heyde, Jozef3, Johannes Arnoldi2, Arnoldus1) was born 15 August 1935 in Mt. Carmel, Carroll County, Iowa, the daughter of Earl Augustus and Emma Mary (Osterholt) Vanderheiden.  She married Merlin Joseph Loneman 15 June 1954 in Mt. Carmel, Carroll County, Iowa.  He was born 25 April 1927 in Carroll, Carroll County, Iowa, son of Joseph and Frances (Griffin) Loneman.

Merlin Joseph and Juliana Bernadina (Vanderheiden) Loneman had thirteen children.

Carmel, Carroll County, Iowa, the daughter of Earl Augustus and Emma Mary (Osterholt) Vanderheiden.  She married Arnold Matthew Beckman 18 October 1958 in Mt. Carmel, Carroll County, Iowa. He was born 03 July 1935 in Iowa City, Johnson County, Iowa, the son of Otto and Lucy (Loew) Beckman.

Elizabeth is also known as "Betty".

Arnold Matthew and Elizabeth Frances (Vanderheiden) Beckman had two children.

 

 

20. Shirley Regina7 Vanderheiden (Earle Augustus6, John William5, Lambertus4 Van der Heyde, Jozef3, Johannes Arnoldi2, Arnoldus1) was born 02 June 1943 in Mt. Carmel, Carroll County, Iowa, the daughter of Earl Augustus and Emma Mary (Osterholt) Vanderheiden.  She married George Bernard Gregory 03 June 1961 in Mt. Carmel, Carroll County, Iowa. He was born 26 September 1937, the son of George and Evelyn (McCullough) Gregory.

George Bernard and Shirley Regina (Vanderheiden) Gregory had three children.
